WHO WE ARE
Our goal is to provide the best environment for young and talented scientists to pursue their graduate studies and develop into independent and creative researchers.
Our PhD Students join the research group of their choice and focus on a biological question but at the same time are exposed to a broad field of scientific questions and approaches in the areas of Biology, Chemistry and Biophysics.
A key feature of modern Life Science is the absence of strict boundaries between the traditional disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. We teach our students the importance of interdisciplinary approaches and we give them the tools to navigate in the much more complex landscape of modern science.

Our graduate program is funded by the Max Planck Society and we are located at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology in Dortmund.
The MPI in Dortmund is one of the 83 Max Planck Research Institutes devoted to understand basic scientific questions in the fields of life sciences, social sciences and humanities.
We are a collaboration between 4 Institutes:
MAX PLANCK INSTITUTE OF MOLECULAR PHYSIOLOGY |
TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY |
RUHR UNIVERSITY |
UNIVERSITY OF DUISBURG-ESSEN |
The members of our Faculty are independent and internationally recognized group leaders, that have come together to create a strong scientific network and an extremely collaborative enterprise in which the students are encourage to learn, to exchange knowledge and to cross the boundaries between the different groups.
The number of our students is now 66 but as you can imagine this number is constantly changing! Older students graduate and new students join us. We are a dynamic and ever-changing PhD program: we draw our spirit and our creativity from our students and in turn provide them with all the needs for their future career.
The IMPRS-CMB was founded in 2001: after more than 15 years of experience we are an established and TRULY international PhD program.
WHAT WE OFFER
fully-funded PhD positions (for a duration of 3/4 years) |
exciting and novel science |
interdisciplinary projects |
committed mentors |
international community |
state-of-the-art technologies |
...and many training opportunities |
WHO WE LOOK FOR
The scientific questions, that we are interested in, are often very complex and require a combination of expertise. For this reason, we value interdisciplinarity and we actively search for students with backgrounds in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Computer Science or Engineering that are willing to work hand in hand with Biologists.
As a Biologist, this is also the place for you: you will be encouraged to tackle questions using a variety of approaches for which you will find training and support on site. Projects are truly interdisciplinary because faculty with different backgrounds closely collaborate.
